My Teaching Philosophy

As an educator, I believe that students should feel safe, supported, and included in the classroom so that they will not be afraid to make mistakes and be themselves. Students should be active participants in their learning, whether that be through asking questions, designing activities, or through self-evaluation. This will allow students to think critically and become excited about learning because the learning will be relevant to them and be applicable to their lives outside the classroom.

I attended a P.D. session where a fairly new teacher from the Ottawa Catholic School Board talked about making all subjects interesting in that you first need to get yourself excited about the content, and if you convey that enthusiasm, it will transfer over to your students. To me, this is what teaching is all about: if you are not enthusiastic about teaching, how do you expect students to be excited about learning?
